5 Things Entrepreneurs Will Never Tell You

So today is supposed to be Part 3 of our series on Unusual Traffic Strategies.

But this morning when I woke up I decided to scrap the whole thing and do something better.

Ok… not really.

But we’re definitely putting a bit of a twist on it.

I want to tell you the crap that entrepreneurs never talk about.

The things we think about but never dare say out loud.

And yes…

It does have to do with traffic. And it has everything to do with building an audience and growing a tribe of raving fans.

More on that later.

But first…

About that crap that entrepreneurs never talk about.

Let’s start with one that we can all relate to.

1. Not everyone will understand what you do online.

Unless they happen to be a blogger or entrepreneur themselves.

Seriously… not your mom. Not your dad. And certainly not your grandma.

I’ve tried to explain to my grandma a 100 times what I do online and she still doesn’t get it.

But guess what?

That’s ok.

She loves me just the same.

Being an entrepreneur is not like having a job. You’re not following the yellow brick road. Not everyone will understand.

And that’s ok.

In fact, when I first got started online I would try to explain to people what I do for a living and usually I just got a blank, confused stare looking back at me.

How do you respond to that?

You don’t.

Nowadays I just share what I do online. (When asked) And the rest is up to them.

When you exude confidence in yourself – the other person generally returns the same gesture. It’s really less about what they think about you and MORE about what YOU think about yourself.

So tell people what you do with confidence. And let them worry about the rest.

Not everyone will “get it”.

And that’s ok :)

2. Some days you will want to give up. That’s just a fact.

Operational hazard of being an entrepreneur.

Not everyday is going to be rainbows and unicorns just because you work from home.

In fact I would argue that having a job is often times a lot easier than working from home. Because at a job you know exactly what you need to do next.

As an entrepreneur – there is no roadmap.

There is no yellow brick road. No boss telling you what to do.

The success or failure of your business is completely dependent on you. And that’s some straight up scary shizzle for most people.

They can’t handle being entirely responsible for their own success.

Or not collecting a “guaranteed” check every two weeks.

Understandable.

Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur.

We’re cut from a different mold.

There are no guarantees when you start your own online business.

And some days you’ll just want to throw in the towel.

That’s part of being an entrepreneur.

It has it’s ups and downs.

But it is by far one of the most exciting adventures you will ever go on.

And those who succeed aren’t necessarily the smartest or the brightest.

They’re simply the one’s who never gave up.

3. It’s lonely.

(Wow… this is getting a bit depressing. I promise it gets better. Keep reading :)

Being an entrepreneur can get quite lonely. Especially as someone building an online business. Most of your day is spent in front of the computer.

There aren’t any coworkers to come interrupt you at random throughout the day. No one coming in to
share office gossip. No one talking about their weekend plans. No office parties.

Just the dog sleeping in the background. And if you’ve got a dog like mine – a few silent farts that come out of nowhere.

Quite impressive for such a small dog.

But the truth is – the silence can be haunting.

It’ll make you wish you had a bunch of annoying coworkers.

But the key (I’ve found) is making sure that you intentionally plan some social time into your life. Whether that be with friends, family, a spouse, or like-minded business owners online.

Even introverts like myself need a little social time :)

4. Kiss the 9 to 5 goodbye!

Whenever I tell people that I work from home they often reply with….

“Ohhhhhhh. That must be nice. Having the freedom to work whenever you want.”

OMG!! I wish.

Because any entrepreneur knows that you’ll be working much longer than 9 to 5. Especially in the beginning.

When I first got started online I woke up early in the morning and stayed up late into the night. Because I had no “Plan B”. For me it was either make this thing work – or go back to college.

And personally – college wasn’t for me. I loved it. But I knew it wasn’t right for me.

The entrepreneur bug hit me hard. And I was going to do whatever it took to make this thing work.

Many years after creating my first blog online – I’m sure glad I stuck it out. It’s been an exciting. Often challenging. But thankfully, a very rewarding ride.

So yes… I happily kiss the 9 to 5 goodbye.

5. Be raw. Be transparent. Be authentic.

Good content is no longer enough.

In fact, it seems like everyone is creating “EPIC” content these days.

But you’re still fighting with thousands of other pieces of content that are literally being created every hour of the day.

So how do you stand out?

What we crave now more than ever before is authenticity.

Someone who will be REAL with us.

Someone who will tell it like it is. No sugar-coating.

Someone who’s willing to share their own journey.

The good. The bad. And the ugly.

Especially the ugly part :)

Because that’s what we’re drawn to.

We’re drawn to people who are real and raw.

People who are willing to share their story even when it’s not “pretty” or tied up in a little bow.

Because that’s what we can relate to.

So much of what’s written online today lacks any sense of personal connection. Most people are simply afraid to REALLY be themselves.

Myself included.

But that’s what we really want. As a creator and as the reader.

Raw. Quirky. Rebel. Real.

Your readers will be attracted to your weird quirks because they make you human.

When you’re flawed, you’re real.

It’s the human story.

And it’s what will make your content stand out from the rest.

It’s why people will buy from you over someone else.

As entrepreneurs, we have an opportunity to impact thousands of people through our content, our blog posts, our videos, and our podcasts.

Make sure you’re creating something meaningful.

Something real.

Something authentic.

Because that’s what creates raving fans.
